Harvey Pekar

Harvey Pekar (October 8, 1939–July 12, 2010) lived in Cleveland, Ohio all his life. He worked as a file clerk at a VA Hospital from 1965 until retirement in 2001. He started writing autobiographical comics in 1972. His American Splendor won the American Book Award in 1987. In 1994, Our Cancer Year (co-written with his wife, Joyce Brabner) won the Harvey Award. An American Splendor film featuring Paul Giamatti as Pekar was released in 2003, winning awards at Sundance and Cannes.
